A Modern Farmhouse Kitchen Makeover
Updated: Feb 11
We met with a sweet couple back in the summer of 2021 about helping them with a kitchen renovation. Their old kitchen was tricky because the space isn't really all that large. The builder installed DARK brown cabinets and brown granite and it just felt very closed in and pretty terrible. The husband is a professional chef, and this clearly was just not his dream kitchen! Let's start with the before pics, shall we!
This space is pretty much a square shape, but there are doors and windows to work around as well. All of the different heights on these old cabinets is really confusing, and the dark and ornate fixtures made the space feel just so heavy.
This room doesn't get a ton of natural light, and this one overhead light was not enough to properly light the kitchen!
In order to achieve a little more storage space, the owners added this stand alone island. It was the best they could do without doing any sort of built in island at the time. But it jutted out into valuable floor space, and just didn't quite make sense.
Ok... so we had to come up with a plan to make this space feel larger, and become more functional for storage and daily use! We knew we had to lighten everything up, color wise. That's obvious. Another thing we decided we should do was swap the refrigerator and range to opposite sides of the room, so we could then add a peninsula off of the wall where the old fridge was located. The owners really also wanted to get a sexy Viking gas range (because chef's don't cook on electric). In order to do that, we had to move the range to the exterior wall so the propane company could do a rough in. This also meant moving plumbing and electrical all around, but that was doable!
Without further ado, I present you, a GORGEOUS, light, bright, modern farmhouse kitchen!!
We are all so in love!! The best part is that this kitchen feels at least 4 times larger. It is SO MUCH BRIGHTER and easy to work in! And the cabinets and drawers are now super functional and there is so much more counter and prep space with the addition of the peninsula!
We decided to go with black on the lower cabinets, and white uppers. Fortunately, this house has tall ceilings, and keeping everything light on top was a huge part of making this space feel larger. The countertops are Calacatta Ultra Quartz from MSI, and the tile is 4x12 Picket from Floor and Decor.
We had all of the open shelves custom made by our contractor, and they turned out so beautiful!
The three gold shade lights also warm up this space perfectly!
Our carpenter handmade these new pantry shelves to replace the builder grade wire shelves that were previously in this space! He added an outlet in here as well, so they can plug in their microwave and keep it off of the countertop... genius!
We had this chevron pattern barn door custom made by a local woodworker and it turned out perfectly! We painted it SW Tricorn Black and added this 12" bar pull.
The hood was custom made as well to match the cabinets perfectly, and give the space a little touch of farmhouse with it's design and shape. The pot filler is Delta Trinsic in Champagne Bronze. And then of course there is the 36" Viking Range (swoon)!
This gorgeous Delta Trinsic Champagne Bronze faucet is so sleek and simple and the color adds just the perfect amount of warmth! These cabinet bar pulls also match the Delta Champagne bronze color very well, and are super affordable on Amazon! This Kohler Farm sink is just the right thing to top it all off!
We knew we wanted glass pendant lights over the peninsula, but let me tell you how many different glass pendant lights there are in this world... I can't even count that high! We finally decided on these seeded pendants in Antique Brass, and I love how they turned out! The seeding adds that little bit of texture, and the bell shape breaks up the clean lines of the rest of the kitchen so nicely. We are super happy with this selection!
Wall Paint: BM Revere Pewter at 50% lightened
