Environmentally conscious (their products are sustainable) Eleek makes tiles, sinks, lighting, and countertops for your home. Eleek was born in 2000 when designer and patternmaker Eric Kaster and his partner, Sattie Clark, decided to put their heads together and market Kaster’s unique designs. Kaster is a 3rd generation patternmaker. What’s patternmaking you may ask? Patternmaking is the old world craft of making detailed wood positives from which molds for metal castings are made. It takes great skills, precision and understanding of spatial relationships to successfully make patterns, and Kaster’s designs are not only well executed but unique. They combine the simple and complex, and the modern with the traditional. Eleek’s pieces are handmade and this is noticable in their products.

The New York Times recently featured an article on style trends for your home that are on the way out, mainly due to companies like CB2 and Design Within Reach bringing chic modern design and trends to the masses. Some trends that I have featured here you might want to reconsider (if you ever considered them in the first place): the glorified hunting lodge (aka artsy mounted heads), animal hide rugs, extreme Baroque. Read the article to see all the trends they ax. I can’t lie, I didn’t see the mounted heads and antler trend becoming a classic but I was surprised they axed the environmentally friendly fabrics trend. That was one I liked! Read this article and reconsider your home’s style.

So if you read this blog regularly you know that two things I love are recycled objects and unique ones. Well this blog features both! Two cool dudes in Brooklyn decided to make trash into treasures by reusing wood that was destined for the dump and turning it into wonderful pieces for your home. Every piece is unique because the wood is from all different places…kinda like New York itself, a melting pot! Check out their site at Scrapile.

Tin ceiling tiles are a great, elegant way to bring light and design into a room. You can get them in a variety of finishes (bronze-so hot right now!) and designs, and they can serve as back splashes, cornices and moldings as well, giving aged touches to homes new and old. The website Classic Ceilings has an absolutely amazing selection and would be a great source if you’re considering this touch for your home.

It’s about that time of year again when people take on big resolutions, one of which sometimes is to redecorate. If you’re looking for new pieces for your home, why don’t you look for unique pieces from the past? There are antique stores all over the place, including the internet, which offers a much greater variety of design than you might find in your local shop. I absolutely LOVE this 1960′ s pair of Cityscape Club chairs and ottoman by designer Paul Evans. They’re sleek and mod while looking very comfortable at the same time. Check them out at online antique store Todd Merrill Antiques.
